CATL 's Energy Storage Validation Research Institute (ESVL) in Xiamen , the world's largest and most comprehensive comprehensive testing and validation platform in the industry, officially began operations on May 28, marking a significant step towards the era of real-world validation for the industry.
Covering an area of 10 hectares and representing an investment of approximately 3 billion RMB (about 440 million US dollars), the test site is designed as an open and shared infrastructure, accessible to all players in the global energy storage sector.
The urgent need for real-world validation
As storage rapidly consolidates as a key element for the global energy transition, the sector faces a growing gap between installed capacity and actual performance.

Nearly one in five large-scale energy storage plants worldwide are underperforming, while 46.5% of energy storage systems experience grid connection delays of more than two months.
Since validation capabilities are still largely limited to component and scenario testing, the industry increasingly needs a more reliable central-level validation framework.
"Scientific rigor is more crucial than ever now that energy storage is entering the gigawatt era," said Dr. Wu Kai , chief scientist at CATL.
"This means being honest about equipment performance, respecting network dynamics, and being rigorous in test results, while raising industry quality standards to the power plant level and bringing validation forward to the pre-delivery phase. ESVL is designed to reflect that rigor and contribute to a more reliable and sustainable era of real-world validation," he added.
ESVL is organized around five innovative laboratories
Network connection that replicates real-world networks. The world's first substation-level network integration laboratory is equipped with a 35 kV/100 MVA network simulator and a real-time simulator, 14 times larger than NREL's 13.8 kV/7 MVA platform, setting a new global benchmark for network-level testing.
It can test more than 10 large-scale energy storage containers simultaneously, simulate 1000-node network topologies, and cover a frequency range of 15 Hz to 60 Hz.
High-voltage faults identified to their root cause. The High Voltage Safety Laboratory, covering from 1 kV to 500 kV, helps investigate the underlying causes of fires and explosions under extreme high-voltage conditions, including lightning pulses, power-frequency and DC withstand voltage, and partial discharge testing.
Large-scale controlled combustion testing. The Thermal and Combustion Safety Laboratory is the world's first large-scale indoor combustion facility equipped with a 20 MW calorimeter. With 100,000 cubic meters of internal combustion space, it can conduct explosion tests in nine large energy storage containers simultaneously.
Proven reliability in extreme climates . Equipped with climate, environmental, salt fog, rain and sand chambers, the Environmental Reliability Laboratory can verify complete system energy storage containers in extreme conditions ranging from -50 °C to 100 °C and simulated high-altitude pressure environments, up to 7200 meters.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing under real operating conditions. The Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory is the only facility in the world capable of housing a full 40-foot container, equipped with a 65-ton rotating platform and a 5 MW power supply, and of performing EMC tests in an anechoic chamber under real high-power charging and discharging conditions.
