ContourGlobal, a leading international independent power producer with rapid growth in renewable energy and battery energy storage systems (BESS), has signed an agreement with CATL, the world's leading battery technology company, to supply 3 GWh of storage systems for projects located in the UK, Greece, and Chile. This is the first comprehensive agreement between the two companies, offering flexibility to align supply with the evolution of their project pipeline.
The core technology of the agreement is an integrated, liquid-cooled, containerized battery energy storage (BESS) solution based on CATL's large-format lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The array comprises a total of 526 containers, each with a nominal capacity of 5.64 MWh, all configured for four hours of continuous discharge.
CATL's technology will support the long-term performance and value of ContourGlobal's projects through a proprietary cell degradation management system that continuously monitors and mitigates cell aging. The batteries are designed to operate reliably throughout the life of the projects, and CATL is also committed to collecting and recycling the units at the end of their useful life, in accordance with European regulations on battery sustainability and circular economy principles.
This marks the first implementation of this technology in ContourGlobal's portfolio and brings to its fleet a set of design features including an integrated liquid cooling architecture and a built-in fire detection and suppression architecture, ensuring stable operation across a wide temperature range, mitigating thermal spread and maintaining compliance with the highest applicable safety and certification standards in the industry.

Furthermore, ContourGlobal projects using CATL technology will be equipped to support future network stability services, including network formation functionality when required by system operators. While network formation services are not yet fully recognized or remunerated under most current regulatory frameworks, the technology is already designed to enable them as markets evolve.

“ We are proud to announce this framework agreement with CATL, a global leader in battery energy storage systems (BESS) ,” said Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of ContourGlobal . “ Beyond the supply of equipment, we are establishing a standardized, large-scale BESS platform across multiple countries, enabling consistent engineering, testing, commissioning, and long-term asset management. By harmonizing technical requirements and project execution practices, we reduce delivery risk, accelerate project implementation, and create a scalable model for the continued growth of our storage business. This agreement reflects both companies’ shared commitment to accelerating the deployment of reliable, large-scale battery energy storage systems through long-term collaboration.”
“ This collaboration combines our advanced battery technology with ContourGlobal’s extensive experience in developing energy infrastructure ,” said LB Tan, CCO and Co-President of Sales and Marketing at CATL . “ With a shared vision, we deliver secure, reliable, and long-term value to customers in the energy transition process in Europe and the rest of the world .”
ContourGlobal's BESS Strategy
Currently, the company has 3 GWh of BESS projects in operation in Europe and America, including in Bulgaria a standalone 202 MW/500 MWh BESS, one of the largest in Eastern Europe, and in Chile, where the company operates 2.5 GWh of BESS in the hybrid projects Víctor Jara and Quillagua, located in the desert regions of Atacama, Tarapacá and Antofagasta.
The supply agreement between ContourGlobal and CATL covers three recently announced projects that will expand the company's presence in the energy storage sector in Europe and Latin America. These include the Wallace project, a 500 MW/2000 MWh stand-alone energy storage system recently acquired in Scotland, marking the company's entry into the UK market; the 100 MW/400 MWh Taxiarches plant in Greece; and Los Maitenes in Chile, a hybrid project combining 131 MWp of photovoltaic energy with 90 MW/360 MWh of battery storage. The projects in Chile and Greece are already under construction, while the Scottish project is in an advanced stage of development.
In addition, the company has acquired a portfolio of 1.6 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) under development in Italy, which is outside the scope of this supply agreement.
