Prymos Energy has commissioned a hybrid solar self-consumption and behind-the-meter storage system at its Alcalá Industrial plant in the VGP Park Martorell (Barcelona), next to the SEAT factory. Alcalá Industrial, part of GCosmos (Cosmos Group), manufactures components and develops production processes for the automotive industry and is a supplier to the Volkswagen Group. The project adds 650 kWp of rooftop photovoltaics to the plant's existing 100 kWp capacity and combines them with an 18-cabinet Risen Energy iCon BESS (Behind-the-Meter Storage System) of 215 kWh each (a compact system with 324Ah LFP cells and liquid cooling): 3.87 MWh and 1,260 kW. The Enfasys EMS manages the system, which has been operational since early September 2026.
Power, the new bottleneck for the industry
Alcalá Industrial needed to increase its production, but its power connection wasn't powerful enough to reach the target levels. When it requested an upgrade, the distributor gave it a very long deadline and demanded it cover the cost of the necessary reinforcement work. But the industry and its contractual obligations couldn't wait.
This is not an isolated case. Applications for access from renewable energy sources, grid-connected batteries, and data centers have overwhelmed the grid. Industry has little room left to increase its electricity consumption, and increasingly, its problem is not just the price of electricity, but access to it itself.
Prymos's response was to generate and store the missing power within the plant itself. After projecting future consumption curves, it designed a system that complements the grid supply to:

- absorb the peaks that exceed the contracted power;
- allow full work shifts above that power when production needs to be increased.
The battery is charged using surplus energy from the solar PV system during the week, reaching 100% capacity over the weekend. During the week, it sustains nighttime consumption until the solar panels take over, supplying power to the factory and recharging the battery. The installed capacity allows the plant to maintain its production rate for three consecutive days without solar production (without exceeding the contracted power).
Spain's largest modular self-consumption BESS
This is the largest behind-the-meter energy storage system built in Spain with individual cabinets. Larger self-consumption batteries exist, but none with this modular architecture.
This modularity makes the battery an investment that adapts to the customer's needs. Today, it solves the power deficit of a factory, which can operate at full capacity without depending on the distribution company. When the grid expansion is complete, the system will reduce costs in two possible ways:
- centrally, arbitraging wholesale market prices on the same site;
- in a distributed manner, dividing the cabinets into subsystems and reinstalling them, along with their EMS, in other centers of the group.
As Andrés Pinilla , BESS Sales Director EU&Latam at Risen Energy , acknowledges: “The solution provided by Risen for this project, with 18 Icon units, represents a significant milestone for Risen, because the modular system could be positioned and commissioned in a short time. Coordination between all stakeholders, including the distributor, was key to shortening the timeline and providing a solution for the end customer.” He adds, “In this project, profitability is important, as in all projects, but it becomes secondary when the difference between having this storage system or not means meeting deadlines or experiencing continuous outages.”
Less footprint, more self-sufficiency
The facility will contribute approximately 960 MWh of renewable energy per year and achieve energy self-sufficiency exceeding 30%. According to official MITECO coefficients, it will prevent the emission of 247.7 tons of CO₂ annually. This represents a 38% reduction in the plant's annual electricity consumption carbon footprint and a reduction of over 70% in its daily footprint on sunny spring and summer days.
