With the aim of modernizing the generation park of isolated systems, EDF and NOVUM SOLAR were awarded long-term electricity supply contracts for the development of photovoltaic solar plants and battery systems, with Electro Ucayali (ELUC) for the towns of Atalaya and Purús , and with Electro Oriente (ELOR) for eight other towns, including San Lorenzo, Requena, Caballococha, Tamshiyacu and El Estrecho.
The contracts were awarded through competitive processes promoted by Electro Oriente and Electro Ucayali , in which several national and international companies in the sector were invited to participate. The first phase of the project involves an investment of $44 million between 2022 and 2024, corresponding to 26 MWp of solar panels and 43 MWh of batteries.
Pedro González Orbegoso, Director of Novum Solar, and Daniel Paschini, CEO of EDF Perú , stated that they were "proud to be able to contribute to improving the quality of service and mitigating the environmental impacts of isolated systems alongside ELOR, ELUC and the Peruvian authorities."The projects implemented by Amazonas Energía Solar are aligned with Peru's commitment to become a carbon neutral country by 2050 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030.
Among the benefits of the project, a reduction of up to 90% in the use of diesel fuel is expected, generating a significant decrease in air pollution, in addition to mitigating the risks of water and soil contamination.Furthermore, it is estimated that the development of the project will prevent the emission of up to 500,000 tons of CO2 over a period of 20 years and will result in a significant reduction in noise levels.
The project also incorporates a number of environmental considerations, since working in an environment as sensitive and important as the Peruvian Amazon in terms of biodiversity and cultural richness requires the development of low-impact projects that generate benefits at the local level.
Furthermore, by enabling a complete and stable service, benefits are expected in terms of business development and improved quality of life in these localities. Finally, the project will have a positive impact in terms of stabilizing generation prices in these isolated systems, as it will reduce dependence on international oil markets.
The photovoltaic plants will be built in different phases until 2024.
The Atalaya and Purús plants have been operational since the end of 2020.
