Egypt has given the green light to one of its major renewable energy generation projects with storage: Nefer Minya , a USD 750 million initiative that will combine 1 GW of photovoltaic solar capacity with a 600 MWh BESS system in the Minya Governorate.
The Egyptian Cabinet granted the development a Golden License , a mechanism that expedites investment-related procedures and requires approval from the Council of Ministers. Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities are behind the project.
Energy storage will be a central component of the initiative. According to Infinity Power, the BESS will be equipped to provide two hours of electricity to the Egyptian grid , reinforcing the integration of new photovoltaic capacity and adding flexibility to the system.
The project is scheduled for completion on September 30, 2027. During its construction, it is estimated to employ around 2,500 engineers, technicians, and workers , while once operational, it will contribute to reducing approximately one million tons of CO₂ per year .

Nefer Minya also has the financial backing of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is part of Egypt's efforts to accelerate the incorporation of renewables and begin deploying battery storage on a larger scale.
According to the EBRD, the initiative will be part of the country's first group of BESS projects developed within the 10 GW renewable energy target set in the NWFE initiative's Energy Pillar.
The environmental and social assessments required for the development have already been completed, Infinity Power reported.
Another key player involved is AIKO , which announced in June 2026 its selection as the sole supplier of photovoltaic modules for the project. The company will supply modules with ABC back-contact technology.
At this point, the figures released regarding photovoltaic capacity differ. While the official approval describes a 1 GW solar plant, AIKO indicated when announcing its participation that the project would reach 1.2 GW of installed capacity , a figure that also appears in information from Infinity Power.
Under that 1.2 GW configuration reported by the companies, the facility could produce enough electricity to supply approximately 1.4 million homes .
Storage to support Egypt's renewable energy leap
The addition of 600 MWh of storage capacity is particularly significant within Egypt's energy strategy. The project not only adds new photovoltaic generation but also incorporates the capacity to manage some of that production and deliver it to the grid at other times.
For Egypt, Nefer Minya will also be one of the first projects that will allow this strategy to be transferred to a considerable scale: 1 GW solar, 600 MWh of storage and USD 750 million of investment , with a planned completion date in 2027.
The development will also contribute to the EBRD-backed renewables target within NWFE, as Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities advance the work necessary to take the project from its current approval stage through construction and subsequent operation.
