Colombia is experiencing an unprecedented energy deficit, a consequence of the El Niño phenomenon, which has negatively impacted the financial performance of the country's main power generators. Given that Colombia's energy mix is primarily hydroelectric , and that drought periods are becoming increasingly severe due to climate change, many experts expect these companies to begin investing in solar and wind power projects to meet national energy demand. In this context, the main power generators and the renewable energy projects they are currently working on have been identified.
Of the 77 companies operating in the country, Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) is the Colombian company with the largest electricity generation capacity with 4764 MW operating mainly in the department of Antioquia .
Next is Enel with 3,404 MW, mostly distributed in Cundinamarca; Isagen with 3,010 MW; Celsia (1,837 MW); AES (1,040 MW); Tebsa (911 MW); Gecelca (727 MW); Prime Energía (605 MW); TPL (555 MW); and Urra (338 MW). Strong commitment from the main companies to diversify Colombia's energy mix . As Energía Estratégica had already anticipated, EPM is the leading energy producer in Colombia, with a 22.8% market share and a 21% share of net effective capacity.
The company has 28 hydroelectric plants, which generated 18,578 GWh last year. However, the company is also investing in renewable technologies to reduce its dependence on hydroelectric power. According to EPM data, in solar generation, it ended 2023 with 50 distributed solar generation systems installed for large consumers and 400 systems for homes and businesses.
In total, 2,311 MWh of distributed solar generation. The La Sierra thermoelectric plant (gas and liquids) generated 214 GWh. In the wind sector, the Jepírachi wind farm in La Guajira generated 32.78 GWh. In addition to these contributions to the energy transition, the company built the Tepuy photovoltaic solar park in the municipality of La Dorada, Caldas, a project that is still in the testing phase.
This has a nominal power of 83 megawatts (MW), enough to supply a city of 400,000 inhabitants.
Its 199,534 bifacial panels are distributed in 16 transformation centers and grouped into 5 circuits.
For its part, Enel is also embracing photovoltaic energy and began commercial operation of the "El Paso" solar park in March of this year, contributing 67.92 MW of net effective capacity to the country's electrical system.
This plant, located in the municipality of El Paso in Cesar, has 274,320 panels distributed across 240 hectares and generates approximately 203.5 GWh/year, enough energy to meet the needs of around 290,000 people. Celsia is also making progress with C2 Energía (solar farms larger than 8 MWp, in partnership with Cubico Investments) , which consists of 17 operational farms with a capacity of 300 MW.
This platform has another 308 MWp under construction and another 522 MWp in the development phase.
He also works on " Laurel" (solar farms smaller than 8 MWp in partnership with Bancolombia), a project that includes 90 photovoltaic systems with an installed capacity of 34 MW and an accumulated generation in 2024 of 10.13 GWh.
ISAGEN also has ambitious generation targets for this year . As revealed to Energía Estratégica, it aims to add 3,000 megawatts (MW) of net renewable capacity. With 22 power generation plants distributed across six departments (Antioquia, Caldas, Santander, La Guajira, Meta, and Tolima), the company disclosed that it is nearing completion and constructing five solar plants in Sabanalarga, Atlántico , which will contribute an additional 100 MW.
In conclusion, although renewable generation is still minimal compared to other energy sources in the country, all these investments demonstrate the commitment of large companies to contribute to the energy transition.
