Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its flagship fund Copenhagen Infrastructure IV (CI IV), announces that Coalburn 1 has commenced commercial operations.
Coalburn 1 is a 500 MW lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) with the capacity to store energy for two hours, located in South Lanarkshire, in southern Scotland. The project will play a significant role in strengthening the flexibility and resilience of the UK electricity system and facilitating greater integration of renewable energy.

Coalburn 1 is also part of CIP's growing portfolio of investments in energy infrastructure in the UK. It is one of three BESS systems connected to the transmission grid that CIP has developed in Scotland. Together, Coalburn 1, Coalburn 2, and Devilla will add 1.5 GW of power and 3 GWh of storage capacity , helping to strengthen security of supply and facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into the British electricity system.
Nischal Agarwal, partner at CIP, notes: “ The successful commissioning of Coalburn 1 represents a significant milestone for CIP and our growing portfolio of battery storage projects in Europe. As the largest battery energy storage system currently operational in Europe, Coalburn 1 will enhance the flexibility and resilience of the UK electricity system, facilitate the integration of more renewable energy, and help reduce costs for consumers. Together with Coalburn 2 and Devilla, this project demonstrates CIP’s ability to develop, commercially structure, and deliver large-scale energy infrastructure .”
