Gotion is moving towards signing a large-scale agreement in Guatemala and plans to have its first projects developed in the country during 2027 , within a regional strategy that already includes a 500 MW contract in Argentina and a commercial presence in Mexico.
Juan Maisterra, ESS Manager LATAM at Gotion , previewed the operation in an exclusive interview during the Future Energy Summit (FES) Guatemala 2026. The company is in advanced talks with a local player and seeks to establish a permanent presence in this market.
“We are about to sign a very big agreement with a player in Guatemala,” Maisterra said.
The expansion comes amid strong growth in energy storage in Latin America. The same week as the meeting, Gotion reportedly closed a 500 MW contract in Argentina , while in Guatemala it is preparing its first commercial and technical partnerships.

“ In Mexico we already have two brands distributing our products ,” the executive added.

The company's progress coincides with a series of renewable energy and storage tenders that are redefining the investment map of Latin America, with recent processes in Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Panama.
PEG-5 opens the door to storage in Guatemala
Guatemala became one of the priority markets for battery suppliers after the PEG-5 tender , which awarded 1258 MW distributed among 57 projects. Around 73% of the capacity corresponds to renewable technologies.
More than 900 MW were allocated to clean energy sources, with hybrid solar developments with storage playing a central role in the process. The average monometric price reached USD 101/MWh , below current supply contracts in the country.
For Maisterra, the result confirmed that BESS systems already occupy a central position within the Guatemalan electricity market.
“ He is definitely a key player now ,” said the Gotion executive.
A large part of the proposals submitted in the call combine photovoltaic generation and batteries, while a smaller proportion of the capacity was oriented towards natural gas.
“ What we have seen in the market is that storage is already included in practically all tenders ,” he explained.
This configuration altered investment criteria in the country. Future developments must provide energy, firm power, and operational flexibility in a system that incorporates more solar generation and faces limitations in its transmission infrastructure.
The outcome of PEG-5 also opened a new expansion agenda. Guatemalan authorities are working on a PEG-6 tender to contract approximately 300 MW of firm power and on PET-4, aimed at expanding the transmission network by more than 500 kilometers.
In this scenario, batteries will allow energy to be shifted to peak demand hours, renewable energy surpluses to be managed, and operational constraints to be reduced. Guatemala's experience is also being observed by other Central American markets that are evaluating the incorporation of BESS systems into their long-term contracting processes.
Strategic partners to operate for 25 years
Gotion aims to support this growth through agreements with developers, engineering, procurement and construction companies, and operators with technical expertise and financial capacity .

Guatemalan customers require manufacturers who are responsive during the construction, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of assets, rather than limiting their involvement to the supply of equipment.
“What they are looking for is a strategic partner that can respond to their needs in terms of service, not just a transactional sale,” Maisterra said.
Continuity of support will be especially important for projects with long-term supply commitments. For this reason, the manufacturer plans to extend its responsibility throughout the entire lifecycle of each system.
“ It’s not just about selling the product, but about guaranteeing that it will work for the 25 years that are being promised ,” the regional representative emphasized.
The selection of partners will be one of the main criteria of the Latin American strategy. Gotion is considering agreements with local and international companies, although it will prioritize organizations that meet the technical, financial, and operational requirements of the projects.
“We want to enter with formal companies,” the executive stressed.
The rapid growth of the market could attract players without sufficient experience in energy storage. Faced with this risk, the company seeks to avoid partnerships that could compromise the execution of projects, the performance of the batteries, or the reputation of the companies involved.
“ We want to sign with partners who have the ability to properly develop projects so that the name of Gotion and our partners is maintained and we are a spearhead in the Latin American market ,” he stated.
The demand for international contractors could also increase. Guatemala has well-established local companies, but the projected volume of development will require additional engineering and construction capabilities to meet the electrical system's objectives.
“The international aspect will also be necessary to achieve the goals that the markets demand, or that the Guatemalan market demands,” Maisterra said.
Global factories to contain price volatility
Gotion also analyzes the evolution of battery prices during 2026. The company avoids projecting a stabilization due to the impact of industrial incentives, tariffs, logistics costs, and the trade policies of each market.
“Talking about price stabilization is a bit difficult because we depend on several factors,” the executive acknowledged.
The end of incentives in China could partially translate into higher costs. However, Gotion's industrial diversification will allow it to select the most suitable source for each Latin American project , based on tariff and logistical conditions.
The company has production facilities in China and the United States, plans to open a factory in Morocco, and is expanding its manufacturing capacity in various markets.
“ Depending on how tariffs, logistics, and everything else that's happening today develop, we can decide where we're going to ship the product from to the Latin American markets and thus mitigate the impact of global price changes ,” Maisterra explained.
This flexibility will be crucial to balancing competitiveness, equipment availability, local content requirements, and long-term guarantees in a region with different regulatory frameworks and business conditions.
By 2027, Gotion expects to have established partners, a significant market share, and projects developed in Guatemala , after completing the initial positioning stage in the country.
“ We in Guatemala are just taking our first steps, so next year we want to have projects developed in this country ,” concluded the ESS Manager LATAM of Gotion.
