Growatt , a global leader in solar energy and energy storage solutions, celebrates the milestone achieved by Colombia in 2025, the year in which solar generation surpassed coal generation for the first time in the national electricity system.
According to figures from the Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME), Colombia generated 4,473.8 GWh of solar electricity, compared to 3,564.2 GWh from coal, representing an advantage of nearly 25% for photovoltaic energy. This result marks a turning point in the country's energy transition and confirms the sustained growth of renewable energy sources.
Installed solar power capacity reached 3,987.77 MW, representing over 80% of the new renewable energy capacity installed in Colombia. This growth has been driven by the commissioning of new photovoltaic plants, the reactivation of existing projects, and a greater share of clean technologies in the national electricity grid.
“This result demonstrates that solar energy is no longer a future alternative; it is a reality that is transforming the Colombian electricity system. At Growatt, we see this milestone as a clear sign of the country's enormous potential to accelerate distributed generation, self-consumption, and hybrid solutions,” stated the Growatt Colombia & Caribbean team.

Growatt has strengthened its presence in Colombia through a portfolio of on-grid inverters, hybrid inverters, and storage systems designed for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. The company has also established a network of local technical support, specialized training, and strategic partners that facilitate the adoption of solar technologies throughout the country.
The growth of solar energy in Colombia opens up significant opportunities for homes, businesses, and communities, especially in regions with high electricity costs.
Growatt's smart solutions allow users to maximize solar production, monitor performance in real time, and prepare for future battery integration, strengthening their energy autonomy.
The company believes this milestone should serve as an impetus to continue developing policies, infrastructure, and financing schemes that accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more resilient, and competitive energy mix.
“Colombia is demonstrating that the energy transition is possible when investment, technology, and a long-term vision converge. Growatt will continue to support this process with innovation, technical support, and solutions that bring solar energy closer to more Colombians,” the company concluded.
