Hitachi Energy announced an additional investment of USD 150 million to expand its power transformer manufacturing capacity in Latin America, in order to respond to the sustained increase in global demand associated with electrification and accelerate the development of electrical grid infrastructure.
This investment strengthens the company's manufacturing presence in the region and consolidates its role as a key supplier of transformers for the Americas, Europe and other markets.
In the case of Colombia, USD 80 million will be allocated to expand and improve the efficiency of the transformer factory located in Dosquebradas (Risaralda).
Meanwhile, in Brazil, an additional USD 70 million will be invested to upgrade the Pindamonhangaba and Guarulhos facilities. These investments will increase the installed capacity at each plant, generating hundreds of direct and indirect jobs and boosting the regional economy.
Latin America plays a strategic role in Hitachi Energy's global agenda to address the growing demand for transformers, driven by accelerated electrification, the expansion of renewable energy, and the growth of energy-intensive digital infrastructure, such as data centers and artificial intelligence. Meeting this demand requires both new infrastructure and specialized service talent to extend the lifespan of existing equipment.
With consolidated renewable energy matrices and qualified industrial talent in Colombia and Brazil, the region is in a privileged position to expand production, strengthen the electrical infrastructure through the agile delivery of transformers and services, and support the energy transition by guaranteeing security and efficiency in supply.
“The demand for transformers is growing faster than ever. With these investments, we are expanding our presence and capacity to support our customers’ electrification plans, reduce delivery times, and offer advanced and sustainable technologies. By working closely with them, we address immediate needs and long-term objectives, reinforcing our role in the age of electricity,” stated Alexandre Malveiro, Hub South America Manager, Transformers Business Unit, Hitachi Energy.
Investment in the transformer plant in Dosquebradas, Colombia (2026–2028)
The investment will enable a comprehensive modernization of the infrastructure to increase production capacity, including new manufacturing and storage areas, facility upgrades, state-of-the-art machinery, and process automation. The project also includes the acquisition of new land for future expansion and logistical optimization.
“Colombia demonstrates that it is possible to invest in and lead sophisticated electrical technology. With Colombian pride, we export high-value solutions to demanding markets in the Americas and Europe. This expansion will consolidate Dosquebradas' regional leadership, strengthen our capabilities—from talent and project management to a more advanced supply chain—and make a tangible contribution to the region's energy transition,” said Luis Francisco Flores, Head of North LATAM, Hitachi Energy .
The Dosquebradas plant, built in 1963, supplies the growing global demand for transformers, essential for the energy transition. The planned expansion will generate approximately 150 direct and 500 indirect jobs, reinforcing its contribution to regional economic and social development.
Additional boost for Guarulhos and Pindamonhangaba plants, Brazil (2025–2027)
In Brazil, Hitachi Energy will invest an additional USD 70 million through 2027, adding to the previously announced USD 200 million investment for the construction of a new plant in Pindamonhangaba and the expansion of the Guarulhos plant, both in the state of São Paulo.
The investment will strengthen regional energy security and accelerate electrification and the integration of renewable energy by increasing the production of high-tech transformers and sustainable solutions. Although construction is in its initial stages, additional resources will be allocated to accelerate the operational maturity and production capacity of the sites.
The investment is expected to increase production capacity by 50%, raising the total constructed area to approximately 48,300 m², exceeding the plans for the first phase. It will also generate 50 additional direct jobs and 200 indirect jobs. From these plants, the company will serve local projects in Brazil and export transformers to North America, Europe, and the Middle East, incorporating advanced technologies and leveraging its proven HVDC expertise in large Brazilian transmission lines.
“Brazil’s dynamic and growing energy market, globally recognized for its leadership in renewable energy and innovation, continues to generate opportunities for advanced infrastructure solutions. As the country expands its role in the global energy transition and meets the growing demand from industry and data centers, our investments strengthen the engineering, manufacturing capacity, and talent that enable Brazil to serve both the local market and customers on nearly every continent with world-class transformer technology,” said Glauco Freitas, Country Managing Director, Hitachi Energy in Brazil.
Sustainable development
True to its commitment to sustainability, the projects in Dosquebradas and Pindamonhangaba will incorporate designs aligned with LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) principles, with a view to obtaining certification in the short term.
In Dosquebradas, the improvements will include sustainable measures such as rainwater harvesting, solar panels, energy and water efficiency, and responsible management of materials and waste. In Pindamonhangaba, the plant will be designed from the outset for highly sustainable operations, using low-environmental-impact materials, rainwater reuse systems, renewable energy sources, natural lighting, and waste and emissions control.
With these strategic investments, Hitachi Energy reaffirms its long-term commitment to a more sustainable, resilient, and accessible energy future in Latin America and around the world. By expanding advanced transformer production and accelerating the delivery of solutions, the company strengthens the region's role in the global energy transition.
