Hitachi Energy, a global leader in electrification, has signed long-term framework agreements with Enedis, France's main electricity distribution network operator, worth €350 million ($398 million) . The agreements secure the supply of distribution and power transformers, helping to address the global transformer shortage, a critical component for strengthening France's electricity grid.
The phase-out of fossil fuels is a climate and strategic priority for France. The country aims to reduce the share of fossil fuels in its energy mix from 60% to 40% by 2030 through a significant transformation towards electrification. A secure, long-term supply of transformers will enable Enedis to modernize the grid on a large scale, manage growing demand, and ensure a reliable electricity supply for millions of consumers.
“ Hitachi Energy and Enedis share a relationship of almost two decades, supported by our manufacturing capabilities in Italy and Poland. These agreements reinforce our commitment to securing transformer production capacity and co-creating solutions that strengthen France’s electricity grid and accelerate the transition to clean energy. As global demand for grid infrastructure increases, these long-term agreements provide our customers with the certainty, availability, and cost predictability they need to modernize and expand their networks within the planned timeframes ,” stated Bruno Melles, CEO of Hitachi Energy’s Transformers Business Unit.

The agreements will also provide transparency regarding environmental performance through an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) , which assesses the environmental performance of each product throughout its life cycle. This is complemented by an ongoing commitment to improving the performance of manufacturing operations throughout the duration of the contract.

By combining a broad installed base with proactive, data-driven insights and comprehensive lifecycle services, this alliance will reduce unplanned outages, improve transformer efficiency, and extend asset lifespan. Together, these capabilities lay the foundation for long-term collaboration and enable Enedis to develop a more resilient, sustainable, and future-proof grid.
