The Honduran government decided to postpone until 2027 the international tender for 1500 MW of new generation capacity, once again delaying the most important process for the expansion of the national electricity system and reopening questions about the true background of the decision.
The process had already been extended months ago under the argument of introducing technical, financial and contractual adjustments to strengthen its execution, a proposal that responded to questions from the market itself about payment guarantees, contractual predictability and financial attractiveness.
However, the new postponement changes the dimension of the debate: it is no longer just about redesigning the scheme, but about explaining why a contract considered strategic for the country's energy security is being pushed back again.
Although officially the argument remains focused on the technical redesign of the process, another interpretation is beginning to take hold within the market: that extending the timeline could broaden the scope for resorting to extraordinary contracting mechanisms if pressure on the system intensifies.

The hypothesis arises because the bidding process had already been formally launched and because Honduras has temporary mechanisms in place to address short-term deficits. In other words, the concern is that increased operational strain could justify direct contracting or exceptional measures while the bidding process remains on hold.
This is not an official definition, but it is a growing concern among energy market players.
And it is worth remembering that Honduras is under pressure on its electrical system due to the sustained growth in demand and the need to incorporate firm capacity to sustain supply, which is why the 1500 MW tender had been presented as the great bet to incorporate long-term structural generation, given that its volume represents a significant portion of the country's demand.

Signals to the investor
In turn, the move also has implications for investor perception, since an auction of this magnitude requires regulatory predictability, reliable timelines and clear contractual signals, which is why the Government had begun re-engineering the process.
In this context, the extension of the timeline opens a new stage of anticipation regarding how the process will ultimately be structured and what mechanisms the system will use to address its needs in the short term.
For now, the concrete fact is that the main structural expansion planned for the Honduran electrical system is postponed , while the market closely follows the regulatory and operational definitions that will accompany this new roadmap.
FES's next stops
The Future Energy Summit tour will continue with FES Guatemala on May 14 and FES Mexico on May 19, where key players from the public and private sectors will address the challenges and opportunities linked to the expansion of the energy system, new investment schemes and the execution of strategic projects.
To access the full FES 2026 tour schedule, learn more about it and be part of the meetings, the FES digital platform is available, while all events will have a live broadcast through the official Future Energy Summit YouTube channel.
