Alpiq took a strategic step in the European energy storage market by acquiring 90% of Harmony Energy , one of the leading developers and operators of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Old Continent.
With this acquisition, the Swiss company adds a development platform with a presence in key markets such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Poland , as well as a multi-gigawatt project portfolio that will support its expansion plan in grid flexibility solutions.
The acquisition also includes nearly 400 MW of projects currently under construction , including a facility in the United Kingdom scheduled to begin operations in the third quarter of 2026.
According to Alpiq, the integration will accelerate the development of an operational portfolio of multi-gigawatt storage over the next few years.

Storage, the cornerstone of the growth strategy
The operation responds to the growing prominence of BESS systems in Europe, driven by the need to provide flexibility to networks with an increasing share of wind and solar generation.
For Alpiq, the addition of Harmony Energy expands its presence across the entire storage value chain, from development and construction to operation and marketing of assets.
"By combining our expertise in flexible generation and energy management with Harmony Energy's development capabilities, we are moving towards our goal of becoming one of Europe's leading providers of flexibility solutions," said Antje Kanngiesser, CEO of Alpiq.
An alliance built on previous projects
The relationship between the two companies did not begin with this transaction.
In recent years, Alpiq had already acquired two projects developed by Harmony Energy, including the BESS system in Cheviré (100 MW) , located in France.
That previous experience allowed for the consolidation of a business relationship that is now being transformed into a shareholding integration.
Harmony Energy will maintain its independence
Following the closing of the transaction, Harmony Energy will continue to operate under its own brand and will maintain its management structure.
Its co-founder, Peter Kavanagh , will remain at the helm of the company as CEO and will retain a 10% shareholding .
For his part, Christoph Bellin , head of the BESS business at Alpiq, will join the board of directors of Harmony Energy, strengthening coordination between the two organizations.
The companies did not disclose the economic value of the transaction.
Europe accelerates the race for storage
The purchase reflects an increasingly visible trend in the European energy market: large utilities and retailers are looking to rapidly expand their storage capacities to keep pace with the growth of renewable energy.
With a project portfolio spread across some of the continent's most dynamic markets, Alpiq aims to position itself among the leading European BESS operators, a segment that will be key to ensuring the flexibility and stability of the electricity system over the next decade.
