The Malaysian government is preparing to launch a new 2000 MW large-scale solar energy tender , called Large Scale Solar 6 (LSS6) , which will mark a milestone in the national energy transition strategy by requiring the mandatory incorporation of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The measure seeks to strengthen the stability of the electrical grid and facilitate greater penetration of renewable energies in the country's energy system.
“LSS6 projects will need to include batteries. This means that new generation initiatives based on solar power and other renewable sources will have to be accompanied by energy storage systems,” said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
The tender, which will be the largest ever held in the Malaysian solar sector, is part of government efforts to modernize the electrical infrastructure and ensure a more reliable supply in the face of the accelerated growth of installed renewable capacity.

Meanwhile, previous reports indicated that authorities were considering bringing forward the launch of the Large Scale Solar 7 (LSS7) program, driven by concerns related to energy security and potential supply disruptions stemming from geopolitical tensions in West Asia. However, to date, no new bidding rounds have been announced for 2026.
The commitment to storage is also aligned with the National Roadmap for the Energy Transition (NETR), which includes the development of the My Battery Energy Storage System (MyBeST) program, aimed at deploying BESS infrastructure at grid scale under the supervision of the Energy Commission.
This initiative aims to promote a more diversified energy mix and accelerate the growth of the country's green economy, with potential investments estimated at between 1.2 and 1.3 trillion Malaysian ringgit by 2050.
Launched in November 2024, MyBeST plans to achieve 400 MW of battery capacity and 1,600 MWh of storage through four projects distributed across Peninsular Malaysia.
With the continued expansion of renewable energy, BESS systems are emerging as a key technology for managing the intermittency of solar generation, improving the reliability of the electrical system, and facilitating a more efficient integration of renewable resources into the grid.
