Masdar formally laid the foundation stone for its 1 GW wind farm in the Zhambyl region of Kazakhstan .
The wind farm is Masdar's first renewable energy project in Kazakhstan and one of the largest integrated wind and battery storage projects in Central Asia, representing an investment of US$1.4 billion. It features a 600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to ensure grid stability. The project is led by Masdar and developed in collaboration with W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, a Samruk-Kazyna Fund company, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund.
Once completed, the project will generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 880,000 homes in southern Kazakhstan, preventing the annual emission of around 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide.
In addition, it will improve the electricity grid infrastructure in southern Kazakhstan by building more than 400 km of overhead transmission lines.

Masdar also signed a roadmap agreement with the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development to advance Kazakhstan's first continuously supplied (RTC) clean energy project, capable of providing clean energy on a large scale 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In line with the country's AI ambitions, the proposed initial phase will provide up to 200 MW of baseload power for data centers and AI infrastructure. The roadmap agreement lays the groundwork for project development, including site identification, technical assessment, and stakeholder coordination.
Nurlan Zhakupov , CEO of Samruk-Kazyna, said: “We are proud to launch this flagship project together with Masdar, marking a significant milestone in our strategic partnership. The 1 GW wind farm opens a new chapter in cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UAE and reflects our shared commitment to advancing a low-carbon economy, deploying innovative technologies, and building a sustainable energy future for Kazakhstan.”
“Our partnership with Masdar is driving the development of renewable energy and bringing Kazakhstan closer to carbon neutrality. This project will strengthen regional energy security and bring cutting-edge technologies to the renewable energy sector. We appreciate our partners’ commitment to investing in the country’s sustainable development and will provide them with all the necessary support to ensure the success of every phase of the project,” added Yerlan Akkenzhenov , Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of Kazakhstan.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi , CEO of Masdar, added: “This project represents a significant step forward in Masdar’s global expansion and our growing presence in Central Asia. As our first project in Kazakhstan, it reinforces our leading position in the region and reflects our commitment to the country’s long-term growth and energy security. We are also pleased to sign an agreement to further deploy uninterrupted renewable energy solutions in Kazakhstan, which will help provide the industries of the future with the clean, reliable, and affordable energy they need.”
The proposed RTC project in Kazakhstan builds on Masdar’s leadership in uninterrupted renewable energy solutions. In October 2025, the company began construction in Abu Dhabi on its first large-scale, 24/7 solar and battery storage project. The project will feature a 5.2 GW (CC) photovoltaic (PV) solar plant, along with a 19-gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) to supply up to 1 GW of daily baseload power, making it the world’s largest combined solar and BESS project.
These projects will help Kazakhstan achieve its clean energy goals and strengthen Masdar's presence in Central Asia, where it already operates in several countries. They will also contribute to the company's goal of reaching 100 GW of global capacity by 2030.
Kazakhstan has set ambitious targets to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix, aiming for 15% renewable electricity by 2030 and 50% by 2050. The Zhambyl project will play a key role in supporting these goals, while also strengthening Kazakhstan's long-term growth, energy security, and sustainable economic development.
