Oman took a new step in expanding its renewable capacity by launching a tender to develop 1.5 GW of solar photovoltaic power , a process that includes one of the country's largest solar projects with storage and will require an investment of over US$1 billion .
The call, promoted by Nama Power and Water Procurement , contemplates the prequalification of developers for two independent projects (IPP): a 1 GW photovoltaic plant equipped with a battery storage system (BESS) and a second 500 MW solar installation.
Both initiatives are part of the sultanate's energy expansion plan, which aims to add 2.5 GW of new capacity during 2026 .
A 1 GW project with storage
The main development corresponds to the Adam Independent Solar Project , which will combine 1 GW of photovoltaic capacity with energy storage using batteries.

The facility will be located in Wilayat Adam , on a plot of land of more than 20 million square meters , and will require an estimated investment of US$746 million .
The second project will be the 500 MW Sinaw Solar IPP plant, which will be developed in Wilayat Sinaw on an area of approximately 5 million square meters , with an estimated budget of US$288 million .
Together, both initiatives will mobilize around US$1.03 billion .
The prequalification stage begins
Nama Power officially opened the prequalification process in June 2026.
Interested companies will be able to acquire the tender documents until July 12 , while the deadline for submitting qualification applications will be July 27, 2026 .
The call corresponds to Tender OPWP/2026/022 , the details of which were published by the state agency in charge of planning and contracting electricity generation and water supply projects in the country.
A broader renewable expansion plan
The new projects are part of Oman's strategy to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and diversify its electricity mix.
In addition to the 2.5 GW addition program planned for this year , Nama Power continues to develop new initiatives within its Solar 2030 program, which includes larger-scale projects and solutions capable of supplying energy continuously.
Along those lines, during May of this year the company signed a power purchase agreement for a 2.7 GW renewable generation and storage project, reinforcing the incorporation of BESS systems as part of its energy planning.
With the new tender, Oman seeks to consolidate storage as a structural component of its solar expansion and advance an infrastructure capable of responding to an increasingly flexible and decarbonized electricity demand.
