The Colombian solar market has gained a new major player. Grupo Colpatria , one of the country's most important business conglomerates with a prior presence in thermal power generation, will enter the photovoltaic business for the first time with a 100 MWp project developed in partnership with EDF Power Solutions Colombia .
The initiative, called Solar Forests of the Plains 6 , is being built about 23 kilometers from Villavicencio, in the department of Meta, and will have a 50% participation for each partner.
Construction began in September 2026 and operations are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027 .
The park will have an estimated generation of 185 GWh per year , equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 100,000 Colombian households.

Furthermore, from December 1, 2027, it will assume commitments under the Firm Energy Obligations (OEF) scheme, incorporating an additional role into the project within the reliability of the National Interconnected System.
For Grupo Colpatria, the operation represents a new step in its diversification strategy within the energy sector.
The conglomerate already has natural gas-fired thermal generation assets that contribute more than 1.5 GW to the Colombian electricity system , so the addition of solar opens a new line within its portfolio.
“Grupo Colpatria’s entry into solar energy reaffirms our commitment to the country’s sustainable development,” said José Fernando Llano , CEO of the group.
The executive also highlighted that the investment aims to support the growth in demand and strengthen security of supply during periods of drought and high temperatures.
EDF is also accelerating its expansion in Colombia
For EDF power solutions Colombia, Bosques Solares de los Llanos 6 is part of a broader growth strategy in the local market.
The company is currently involved in hydroelectric, solar and biomass generation projects, and is a shareholder of Refoenergy Villanueva , in Casanare, presented as the largest forest biomass plant in the country.
In addition, in September 2026, EDF, together with BTG Pactual Commodities, signed an agreement with Isagen to acquire a portfolio of approximately 208 MW of hydroelectric power plants and solar parks.
“Bosques Solares de los Llanos 6 is a new step in our strategy in Colombia and confirms the acceleration of our growth in the country,” said Raissa Lafranque, CEO and director of EDF power solutions Colombia.
On a global scale, EDF's renewable and low-carbon energy subsidiary has a presence in more than 20 countries and a portfolio of approximately 52 GW gross in operation or under construction .
According to the partners' estimates, the new solar park will prevent approximately 113,220 tons of CO₂ per year .
The operation also appears in a context of growing need for new generation in Colombia, where the expansion of demand, the diversification of the matrix and the need to reinforce the reliability of the system are generating new opportunities for renewable projects.
With this move, Colpatria shifts from a presence concentrated in thermal generation to adding its first solar development, while EDF deepens a strategy that combines renewables, acquisitions and capacity expansion in the Colombian market.
