The United Nations has designated Panama as a "Global Champion" in energy transition, granting it a prominent role in the high-level dialogue convened by Secretary-General António Guterres for September of this year. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the announcement of this important designation, which places Panama alongside some twenty other nations that have taken the lead in adopting energy transformation strategies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations' 2030 Agenda. These champion countries are tasked with promoting, raising awareness of, and inspiring commitments and actions around the five themes of the dialogue: access to energy; an inclusive and just energy transition, in accordance with the SDGs; innovation, technology, and data; and finance and investment. The National Energy Secretariat, under the Ministry of the Presidency and led by Dr. Jorge Rivera Staff, will serve as the liaison and head of the country's delegation in this initiative aimed at accelerating the goals of SDG 7 through innovative solutions, investments, and multi-stakeholder partnerships. This distinction is based on the objectives set by this administration and grounded in the Guidelines of the 2020-2030 Energy Transition Agenda, which have been supported in recent months by the National Energy Secretariat at both the local and international levels.

These UN-designated countries are also tasked with fostering energy agreements among member states, companies, cities, and other stakeholders. These agreements will be evaluated in the High-Level Dialogue, the outcome of which will be presented at the Glasgow Climate Change Conference (COP 26 of the UNFCCC), scheduled for November. Panama has been assigned Topic 3 of the debate, focusing its intervention on the positive impacts of a just and inclusive energy transition, consistent with the principles of SDG 7: ensuring affordable, secure, reliable, and modern energy. The Panamanian delegation will also address topics such as gender equality in the sector, opportunities for generating new jobs, and the role of young people in the energy transformation, among others. Joining Panama on the list of global champions are Germany, Brazil, Colombia, China, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Spain, Russian Federation, India, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Mauritius, Nauru, Nigeria, Netherlands, Pakistan, United Kingdom and the Dominican Republic.
