Panama continues its commitment to photovoltaic solar energy in partnership with the private sector.
In 2021, it achieved 399.21 MW of installed capacity, doubling the values of 2019 (185.07 MW) and 2020 (194.61 MW).
This is evident from the statistics of the Panamanian electricity market prepared by the National Authority of Public Services.
This is due to the entry into commercial operation of some projects that increased the participation of this technology in the Panamanian electricity matrix from 5% to 10.37%.
The National Energy Secretariat also highlights that, as a result, electricity generation from this technology increased significantly compared to pre-pandemic levels.

According to an interactive graphic published by Ramses Torrijos , Electrical Engineer at the National Energy Secretariat, solar power achieved 527,006 MWh out of a total of 10,327,663 MWh during 2021, placing it as the fourth largest source of generation in Panama at 5.1%.
That detail is not insignificant if one considers that in 2019 solar power generated between 294,941MWh and 316,776 MWh, making it the seventh largest source of generation in the electricity matrix at that time.
Government authorities highlighted this detail and commented on it on social media: "This is how energy generation in Panama is closing out 2021, almost doubling its solar generation compared to 2019," said Rosilena Lindo , National Undersecretary of Energy of Panama, via LinkedIn.
The news would also be favorable for the distributed generation segment.
According to the SOLE Generation program of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, distributed solar power would have closed 2021 with a year-on-year increase of over 25%.
And that wouldn't be all.
The investment potential is estimated to be over USD 2 billion, corresponding to 1,450 MWp, from the installation of 137,800 systems.
Furthermore, UNEP claims to have verified significant interest from banks in financing these types of facilities.
Therefore, the growth forecasts for distributed solar energy would be positive. https://www.energiaestrategica.com/2021-culminara-con-aumentos-del-60-en-energia-solar-distribuida-en-colombia-y-25-en-panama/
