Currently, Peru has 36 isolated electrical systems made up of hydroelectric plants and mostly thermal power plants, which add up to around 220 MW of installed capacity in rural areas and localities without access to the National Interconnected Electrical System (SEIN), mainly in the departments of Loreto and Ucayali.
In the context of the energy transition, 15 isolated systems are developing hybrid renewable energy and energy storage projects that will progressively replace the thermal generation installed so far in this market segment.
According to César Alfredo Peña Ramos , a consultant in renewable energy and green hydrogen, the fifteen isolated systems are committed to incorporating photovoltaic solar technology and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
In fact, it reports that nine of them are already operational and the rest are in advanced stages of development.

From Peña Ramos 's perspective, the following graphic illustrates the direction to take with an energy transition starting from a traditional isolated system governed by thermal generation (100%) towards a system with greater participation of renewable energies including solar power plants plus BESS storage.

César Alfredo Peña Ramos, a renewable energy consultant , also points out that since 2010, projects have been developed using off-grid, autonomous photovoltaic systems that benefit homes, health centers, and educational facilities.
These projects, he indicates, have regulated tariffs (BT8 and Cargo RER) set by Osinergmin that guarantee the sustainability of this type of system.
"As of January 2025, there are approximately 270,000 photovoltaic systems in commercial operation, managed by 11 concessionary companies, both state-owned and private," he lists.
These systems have been installed in the coastal, mountain and jungle regions and in all 24 departments, primarily in rural areas, isolated localities and border areas of the country.
And he elaborates: The evolution of the park of autonomous photovoltaic systems not connected to the grid has had a sustained growth, since from having around 4,500 photovoltaic systems in 2010 we went to having around 270,000 photovoltaic systems in January 2025, this was mainly due to the exponential growth between the years 2017 2019, as a result of the first RER auction for the supply of energy to areas not connected to the grid which installed around 210,000 photovoltaic systems, thus increasing the initial park to reach the 270,000 that we currently have.

Mega event in Peru
As part of the progress towards energy diversification proposed by the amendment to Law No. 28832, Future Energy Summit (FES) will hold a mega renewable energy event in the country on September 29, which promises to bring together hundreds of executives from the sector, as it has been doing in other parts of the world.
It is worth noting that in February, on the 26th and 27th at the Hotel Emperador in Buenos Aires, more than 500 industry leaders will participate in the meeting, at a time when the energy sector is awaiting the update of new MATER mechanisms, the definition of new electric transport works and a public tender for approximately 500 MW of battery system power.
The tour will then continue in Mexico on March 11 with FES Mexico, and on April 2 and 3 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, FES Caribe will take place.
In both cases, the main companies in the sector will assess the reality of the market and the region.
It is worth noting that the meetings include exclusive networking spaces.
