Sungrow, a leading global supplier of photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems, has announced the successful commissioning of what is expected to be Europe's largest operational battery energy storage system (BESS), located in Hams Hall, in the West Midlands region of the UK, in collaboration with BW ESS, a global company dedicated to the ownership and operation of energy storage systems.
The 350 MW / 1243 MWh project, which uses Sungrow's PowerTitan 2.0 technology, went from grid connection to commercial operation in just 20 days, demonstrating exceptional speed in project execution and commissioning.
Located next to the Hams Hall national electricity substation, this new project will play an important role in balancing electricity supply and demand, promoting the integration of renewable energy into the UK electricity system and strengthening the resilience of the grid.
Delivered in 20 days thanks to technical expertise and close collaboration
The successful completion of the first phase of Hams Hall within 20 days was made possible thanks to:

- Direct access to specialized technical knowledge: Sungrow deployed engineers specializing in battery energy storage systems (BESS) on-site, enabling them to analyze and resolve technical challenges with immediate collaboration from the technology teams. This reduced reliance on remote monitoring and facilitated faster decision-making during critical commissioning activities.
- Thorough preparation before commissioning: During the initial commissioning phase, the team prioritized identifying faults and verifying the operation of the refrigeration units, resolving any potential technical issues before the actual commissioning began. Furthermore, throughout the actual commissioning, specialized operational technology (OT) engineers were present, providing immediate support for system integration and troubleshooting operational problems.
- Close coordination between the client and headquarters: the client's representatives were present on the premises almost daily and established communication channels with Sungrow's headquarters; thanks to this, both teams were able to quickly resolve outstanding issues, maintain the pace of work and minimize delays between the different commissioning phases.
Taken together, these measures enabled the teams to complete commissioning under real-world conditions and handover, which contributed to the project's rapid progress towards becoming operational.
James Li, Vice President for Europe at Sungrow, stated:
“The execution of a battery storage project of this scale depends on the ability to combine engineering expertise, meticulous preparation, and close collaboration at every stage. At Hams Hall, our teams worked hand in hand with BW ESS to quickly identify and resolve challenges, contributing to the commissioning being completed in just 20 days. This incredible achievement demonstrates how the right technical support and strong partnerships can accelerate the deployment of critical energy infrastructure as the UK expands its renewable energy capacity.”

Nan Jia, chief technology officer of BW ESS, stated:
“Taking a 1243 MWh system from grid connection to commercial operation in 20 days is an extraordinary achievement, and it was only possible because BW ESS and Sungrow approached it as a shared engineering challenge. Following our joint work in Bramley, Hams Hall demonstrates what this collaboration can achieve at scale. Projects like this are fundamental to the UK’s transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system.”
Supporting the UK's ambitions in energy storage
Hams Hall represents a significant addition to the UK's growing battery storage infrastructure. As more renewable energy is brought into the electricity grid, large-scale storage projects are becoming essential for managing fluctuations in generation and demand, helping to maintain a reliable and resilient electricity system.
The project is expected to be further expanded in its second phase, increasing total capacity to 400 MW / 1,424 MWh. At full capacity, BW ESS estimates it will be able to meet the electricity needs of approximately 1.3 million homes for up to 3.5 hours.
This project builds on the ongoing collaboration between Sungrow and BW ESS in the UK, which includes the Bramley BESS project in Hampshire. This continued collaboration reflects BW ESS's confidence in Sungrow's energy storage technology, its engineering project execution capabilities, and its expert on-site technical support.
Through its PowerTitan energy storage technology and specialist engineering support, Sungrow continues to support the deployment of industrial-scale storage projects that strengthen energy security and facilitate the UK's transition to a cleaner energy system.
