Norvento TECHnPower has introduced the nXL family, multipurpose bidirectional high-power converters designed for utility-scale applications.
These units represent a technological leap in density and performance, offering up to 9 MVA integrated in 20 feet, including a medium-voltage cell and transformer.
With a density of 622 kVA/m³, they are the most compact converters on the global market. These converters are designed to operate both in on-grid and off-grid systems, with seamless transition between different operating modes, such as grid-forming and black start. In dialogue with Strategic Energy Europe, company representatives highlight: "We are currently focused on establishing alliances with key renewable energy developers and major utility market players. The versatility of the nXL range lies in its ability to integrate with photovoltaic plants, battery energy storage systems (BESS), green hydrogen electrolysers and data centres.
It can also be deployed in port infrastructure (OPS) and railway catenaries, as well as serving as a STATCOM or active filter. "As part of the agreements we have established with the Innovation Fund (which granted us 27.5 million to develop this technology in our future zero-emissions factory neFO), we are already formalising letters of interest and commitment for the first year"s production," the company notes. Technical innovation and sealed design Among the most relevant technical features are ultra-low harmonic distortion (THDi <1%) and a DC/AC ratio of up to 200% without modifications. The cooling system, unique in the market, combines liquid cooling for the main components with internal cold-air recirculation without external exchange, providing IP65 protection for the entire unit.
This design ensures stable performance even in extreme conditions such as deserts, high-corrosion maritime areas or environments with conductive particles, including mines and volcanic zones. The integration of advanced control algorithms and predictive maintenance based on artificial intelligence, together with the elimination of air filters, minimises maintenance requirements. "At the level of guarantees and cybersecurity, as these systems are connected to the grid, they become even more critical.
It is essential to ensure the protection of the systems themselves and the data generated, particularly in large-scale installations," emphasise Norvento TECHnPower. Market outlook The company has started to roll out its commercial strategy in markets where energy storage is expanding rapidly. The initial focus is on Europe with Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy as priority destinations due to geographical proximity and certification frameworks similar to those in Spain, which facilitate homologation and market entry.
In parallel, attention is also directed towards the United States and Latin America, regions with strong demand for energy storage solutions. In this context, standardisation and scalability of large-scale systems are central challenges, with additional requirements such as remote management of large volumes of energy and compliance with local regulations. One of the strategic sectors where Norvento TECHnPower expects strong growth is data centres, which require highly reliable solutions to ensure continuous power supply.
"Data centres are one of the main sectors we are addressing, as they are growing rapidly and are major energy consumers, with a strong need for efficient and sustainable solutions to reduce their carbon footprint.
The nXL can perfectly meet these needs, they state. Sustainable manufacturing Production of the nXL family will take place at neFO, Norvento"s new plant in Lugo, conceived as Spain"s first self-sufficient and emissions-neutral industrial facility.
This plant will prevent the annual emission of 187,000 tonnes of CO, aligning the company"s technological strategy with its sustainability goals. According to Álvar Mayor Miguel, Innovation Director at Norvento TECHnPower: "With the nXL range we have developed a family of bidirectional converters that combine the highest power density on the market with multipurpose capability.
These units can operate both in grid-connected and isolated environments, and transition seamlessly between different operating modes, allowing them to adapt to very diverse applications.
