Spain has a broad pipeline of solar PV, wind power and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects currently undergoing environmental permitting, totalling more than 3 GW of new capacity.
A new report by Energía Estratégica provides detailed data, project insights and key takeaways to assess business opportunities in the Spanish market.
The exclusive study compiled by Energía Estratégica analyses the outlook for renewable energy and battery storage in Spain.
It identifies 50 new projects submitted for environmental approval, representing 2,155.8 MW of new renewable capacity and 485.9 MW of BESS.

The report is available free of charge and includes specialist analysis, a project pipeline, a comprehensive market view and practical tools for strategic decision-making.
This comes at a time when sector growth remains steady but is increasingly constrained by regulatory hurdles and infrastructure bottlenecks.
Of the total capacity under review, solar PV accounts for 79% of renewable power, with 26 plants totalling 1,698.5 MW.
Wind power, with a wider geographical spread but smaller individual projects, contributes 457.3 MW across nine developments.
Energy storage is also gaining traction, with 12 BESS projects adding up to 485.9 MW, underlining its strategic role in Spain"s future power system.
Solar developments stand out for their scale, in several cases exceeding 150 MW per project.
Many are being designed as hybrid plants integrating battery storage, a trend that is becoming standard to mitigate price cannibalisation risks, optimise grid connection points and improve overall operational efficiency.

Market context and key playersAccording to official figures, Spain added more than 8.8 GW of new renewable capacity in 2025, of which 88% was solar PV.
This reflects both market maturity and the momentum of national energy policy aimed at meeting the targets of the revised PNIEC (National Energy and Climate Plan), which sets a goal of 22 GW of operational storage by 2030.
The report also identifies leading market players such as Iberdrola, Acciona, Naturgy, Endesa (through Enel Green Power), Forestalia and Ignis.
These companies are reshaping their portfolios towards hybrid projects and stand-alone storage solutions, with almost 60 GW of capacity installed, under construction or in development, aligned with broader global decarbonisation strategies.

Public incentives are playing a key role in sustaining investment momentum.
The report highlights funding under the FEDER programme managed by IDAE, which has already awarded 818 million in non-repayable grants to 126 storage projects.
The sector is also closely watching the launch of Spain"s capacity market, whose first auction could take place in the first half of 2026, subject to approval by the European Commission.
This mechanism is expected to provide long-term revenue stability for storage and firm generation assets.
However, significant challenges remain.
Environmental permitting can take 18 to 24 months, while more than 80% of grid nodes are saturated, limiting new connections and forcing developers to rethink business models through hybrid configurations and shared infrastructure.
At the same time, a new energy frontier is emerging around data centres.
Although 12 GW of electrical capacity has already been authorised, only 23 GW are expected to materialise by 2030.
Companies such as Forestalia and Iberdrola, alongside developers like Go Energy, are leading agreements with operators including Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Data4, combining renewable generation, long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) and storage solutions.

OutlookOverall, the Energía Estratégica report portrays an energy transition well underway in Spain, supported by mature technologies, established players and an activeyet demandinginvestment ecosystem.
In this context, battery storage and project hybridisation are emerging as the key pillars for the long-term viability of renewable energy projects in the country.
Against this backdrop, the Future Energy Summit (FES) Iberia Renewables & Storage will take place in Madrid on 12 February, marking the start of the FES international roadshow for 2026.
The event will bring together hundreds of public- and private-sector leaders to discuss the progress of the energy transition in Iberia, evolving regulatory frameworks and new business opportunities. Tickets are now available.
